I have been saving up Marriott Bonvoy points all year in anticipation of my family’s annual trip to Hawaii, and I wanted to use them to book a nice hotel for our vacation. In 2017, we stayed at the Sheraton Waikiki, however at that time the rooms were quite outdated. Since then, the hotel has been renovated, so we decided to try it out again for our trip this year.
Booking
We booked a nine night stay and for five of those nights I was able to request a suite upgrade with five suite night awards I had earned in 2022. To book this, I split the booking into two reservations. The first five nights cost 221k Marriott points, and 1 night was free due to the benefits of booking with Marriott points. The remaining 4 nights cost 219k points.
Without the points, the room rate would have been $710 per night. I requested an upgrade using my suite night awards for five nights and five days before check-in I was delighted to find out that the upgrade cleared for a luxurious large room. The going rate for the large luxury room is $1,154 per night during Canadian March Break. This room is 640 square fee with three double beds while the original room I booked was 240 square feet with two double beds.
Arrival
The hotel is located at the end of Waikiki Beach, making walking to all the nearby attractions easy. However, with three kids, we opted to rent a car to make things easier, parking at the hotel cost USD 45 per day with in and out access.
Check-In
The check-in process was smooth and efficient. The lobby is open and spacious, with multiple paths leading to the pools, rooms, shops, and restaurants. The gentleman who assisted with our check-in was excellent and even presented us with a box of chocolates and a card to use at the gift shop for being a Titanium Elite member. He also linked our two bookings and put a note to request to stay in the upgraded room for the entire duration of our stay based on availability. This was the best check-in experience I have had with Marriott in a long time.

Large Luxury, Corner Room
The room was stunning, with a breathtaking balcony view of the ocean, beach, and Diamond Head. It had three double beds, a dining table, a sizeable modern drawer for the TV, an end table with multiple outlets, a spacious washroom with dual sinks, a separate glass door for the shower, a bidet toilet, and a large separate bathtub. The same upgraded room was sold out for the 4 remaining days of the trip. The transition was seamless, the hotel upgraded us to another room on the same floor with the same room, it was just a smaller room.
Amenities
The hotel had plenty of amenities, including a fitness center on the fifth floor, two pools: Heluoma Playground Pool (family-friendly with multiple depths and a giant slide), and Edge Infinity Pool (adults only), several shops in the lobby, childcare centre and two laundromats that accepted all credit cards.

While the mandatory USD $42 resort fee may seem like an added cost, it does come with some benefits, such as mobile Wi-Fi for the duration of the stay and a free GoPro rental for one day.
Wrapping Up
Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Sheraton Waikiki. It was modern, family-friendly, and located conveniently on the strip. It’s our favourite hotel in Waikiki, and we can’t wait to return. If you have Marriott points, this hotel is an excellent option for maximizing your redemption value.
Award night details:
Points required for a free night (Standard room): 54,000 to 85,000 points
Marriott Bonvoy does not publish award night charts anymore as they have moved to dynamic pricing. The Sheraton Waikiki typically runs between 54,000 and 85,000 points per night. This means you cannot use the free night award from the Marriott Bonvoy™ American Express®* Card or Marriott Bonvoy™ Business American Express® Card but with welcome bonuses of up to 85,000 points they can provide enough points for getting you at least one free night here!
