Rogers Connections Mastercard

Rogers Connections Mastercard to offer 2% cash back & will no longer have an annual fee

The Rogers Connections Mastercard that was introduced into our market last year will be undergoing some updates that take place as of May 17. Those changes include getting rid of the annual fee for all customers and a boost in the cash back earn rate to 2%  for customers who hold two or more qualifying services with Rogers.

The 2% cash back earn rate & no annual fee

Starting on the May 17 the Rogers Connections Mastercard will become the highest base earn rate no annual fee cash back card in Canada for those who are also Rogers customers. Those who qualify will earn 2% cash back on all purchases from May 17 onward. The details as provided by Rogers are as follows:

  • Cardholders can get 2% unlimited cash back on all eligible purchases if they have two qualifying services with Rogers. The combination of services must include one Rogers Wireless phone service plus one Rogers Internet, TV, Home Phone or Home Monitoring service.
  • All other Rogers Connections Mastercard holders will continue to get 2% unlimited cash back on eligible U.S. dollar purchases and 1% unlimited cash back on other eligible purchases.
  • The card will no longer have an annual fee.

As you can see if you are a Rogers Wireless customer and have one other service with them you’ll be eligible to earn the 2% cash back on all purchases. This is a great earn rate for a no annual fee cash back card and matches the best annual fee based card the SimplyCash® Preferred Card from American Express

As well, the card has had an annual fee starting in the second year (well it was supposed to start in the 2nd year as the card has not even been out a full year yet) and Rogers has done away with the fee for all customers – whether they have Rogers services or not.

The rest remains the same

The rest of the offering on the Rogers Connections Mastercard remains the same:

  • A welcome bonus of 10% cash back on all purchases for the first three months, up to a value of $100.
  • Five (5) Roam Like Home™ days at no cost every year (up to $75 value).
  • A 30% bonus on the earned cash back value when redeemed for Rogers purchases like phone upgrades, wireless accessories, or your monthly Rogers bill.

Wrapping it up

We are definitely in the era of card issuers revamping their cards and/or associated programs quicker than we have seen in the past to react to market conditions and to try to attract more customers to their cards. We’ve seen it from BMO, Neo and now from Rogers as they Rogers Connections Mastercard is undergoing changes roughly 8 months from when it was officially launched. And those changes are for the better so my belief is the initial uptake on the card must not have been as great as Rogers expected. Now with a potential to earn 2% cash back on all purchases and no fees attached I do think they should see a healthy increase in their own customer base grabbing this card.
