For those of you who may not be familiar with National Bank of Canada A la carte rewards they give various redemption options from travel to merchandise to gift cards and more. On the travel side you have two options, you can redeem your points via the A la carte travel agency or you can take the most flexible option and book your travel with anyone you like and then redeem points against that charge once it shows up on your statement. You have up to 60 days after that charge posts to redeem points against it.
With the 20,000 point welcome bonus if you choose to redeem it for travel via the A la carte travel agency you’ll get $200 in value and a bit less when you redeem for travel that you may book yourself. For those self non A la carte travel bookings you can redeem 12,000 points for a $100 credit or if you redeem 55,000 or more points in one shot the exchange rate becomes 11,000 points for a $100 credit. Depending on how you redeem with this option those 20,000 points are worth between $166.67 and $181.82. As you can see the incentive is to book with NBC’s travel agency but it is nice to have the option to also complete your own bookings.
Wrapping it up
Canada’s sixth largest bank just came out with an increased welcome bonus offer on their primary travel rewards credit cards of 20,000 points when you spend $3,000 in the first three months. On top of that they are waiving the first year annual fee which is nice for those who have not considered National Bank before but want to give them a go right now. Not to mention, many of these card’s competitors are offering first year annual fee rebates or waivers as well. I must say though when you do compare to this the competitors the 20,000 point bonus is on the lower end so be sure to do your research!
