December 11 Update: Alaska Airlines reveals oneworld benefits for Mileage Plan elite members, American Airlines to offer Elite Choice Rewards & changes to Avianca’s LifeMiles program

Here’s your Rewards Canada Daily update! Your daily dose (or near
daily dose) of loyalty program, credit card and travel news, bonuses,
deals and more. This update is brought to you by the HSBC World Elite Mastercard.

Earlier this week Alaska Airlines revealed what their Elite Mileage Plan members will receive as oneworld
tier status in the global alliance. The airline officially joins
oneworld on March 31, 2021 and the matching oneworld tier status happens
automatically at that time. Here is how the status will line up:

  • MVP Gold 75K = oneworld Emerald
  • MVP Gold = oneworld Sapphire
  • MVP = oneworld Ruby

The best benefits are seen for MVP Gold and up as they included
lounge access, excess baggage and more. Here’s the complete list of
benefits seen across the oneworld alliance.

Alaska has also announced their update elite qualification
requirements for 2021 to earn status for 2022. The big shift here is
that you now will need to complete anywhere from 2 to 6 segments on
Alaska Airlines. This move totally makes sense as the airline is gaining
so many partners with the joining of oneworld that they want to ensure
earning status isn’t abused by people who will never fly the airline (or
at least buy tickets through them) but go for Alaska status versus
another oneworld airline status. Here are the qualifying requirements:

and this year’s for comparison:

Also from earlier this week the American AAdvantage program
announced Elite Choice Rewards for their higher up elite members.
Platinum Pro and Executive Platinum Members will be able to select a
reward from a curated menu . Those items are:

Avianca LifeMiles
has announced some changes to their
program – most of which I don’t think will affect most of us as many of
us tend to just buy their miles for flights and not really pay interest
to how much the program earns for revenue flights or elite status. That
being said I know we have some Avianca frequent flyers who read our site
so this will interest you. The changes that are coming in 2021 are the
addition of one new elite level called Red Plus that falls in-between
basic membership and Silver elite status. That level will receive an
elite bonus on earning miles (see the chart below), Priority Check-in, a
minimum amount of miles on domestic flights in Colombia and Ecuador as
well as a Maternity/Paternity leave option to retain status.

The bigger news in the change of the program is their move to a
revenue based earning model. You will now earn LifeMiles based on spend
and get a multiple of miles per US$ spent on airfare. The higher the
status you have the more miles you earn.

Finally they have reduced the 2021 elite status qualifying requirements as follows
