WestJet announced yesterday that their London Gatwick from
Calgary and Toronto will be going to year round service. All the other
cities will remain on summer seasonal service. The Calgary flights will
operate 3x weekly over next Winter while Toronto will continue to have
daily service. (Source WestJet)
If you were watching or listening to any Canadian news over
the past 24 hours you should have learned about a new Canadian airline
called newleaf. The ultra low cost carrier is slated to
start service on February 12th. These guys came about really quick but
in reality they fast tracked their service because the actual airline is
Kelowna based Flair Air. Flair Air is a division of Kelowna
Flightcraft, best known for their cargo services and also the being the
airline that was Greyhound Air back in the 90s! The airline is going to
be run much like Ireland’s Ryanair and the U.S.’s Spirit Airlines by
charging for just about everything. If you can fly with just a purse or
laptop bag and check-in online and don’t print a paper boarding pass
you’ll get their lowest fares. Outside of that you’ll have to pay more.

Of course newleaf won’t have a frequent flyer program but you should
be able to use proprietary credit card reward program points and miles
to redeem for flights on this airline. Heck if a flight is $89 you can
pull up to 4 one way tickets at that price with some card’s sign up
