Here’s your Rewards Canada update! Your near daily dose of loyalty program, credit card and travel news, bonuses, deals and more.

Virgin Atlantic announced today they will be joining the SkyTeam alliance. The airline which is partly owned by SkyTeam carrier Delta with which it has a joint venture partnership has finally bit the bullet on an alliance. For the better part of a couple of decades Virgin Atlantic avoided joining an alliance but now they will be part of one very soon – in fact they plan on being a full fledged member of SkyTeam by January 2023.

The airline had a brief stint flying to Vancouver which ended in 2014 and had ambitious plans to expand and serve other cities like Toronto and Calgary. At this point they don’t fly to Canada and there are no signs of them adding service soon. That being said, SkyTeam is the second largest alliance for Canadians in terms of airlines and cities served so being able to have one more airline to earn and burn your miles/points with is always a good thing. IHG Avid

We now know the opening dates of five of the seven new IHG Hotels that were or are set to open in Canada this year. Two have already opened their doors to travellers while the rest will be opening in late October and November including Canada’s first avid Hotel. Here are the details:

Travel with Massi has noted that American Express Platinum Cardmembers can receive a dining credit at the Moevenpick Cafe in Berlin’s new Brandenburg Airport as that airport does not have a Priority Pass lounge at the moment. Normally, Amex cards are exempt from dining credits however due to no lounge access it appears there is an exception here. Massi details that this won’t show up in the Amex lounge listing however when you show your Priority Pass membership you will receive a 23EUR credit and one guest can also receive that amount. The question is – will this work for Canadian issued cards? I believe it should but can only 100% sure if a Canadian cardmember tries and confirms a credit. Click here for more details (In German)
