Welcome to part one of our annual series on new hotel openings in Canada! This year we kick things off with Marriott who have plans to open no less than 11 properties this year. If all goes to plan they will have new hotels open up in Alberta, British Columbia, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Quebec and Saskatchewan.
With nearly 9,000 hotels Marriott Hotels is one of the largest hotel companies in the world and they are one of, if not the biggest in Canada. The chain comprises of 33 brands ranging from mid-level budget locations to high end luxury resorts. Here in Canada we currently have 23 of their brands operating as we have finally seen Moxy Hotels added. The new hotels opening this year will bring their portfolio to nearly 290 properties in Canada.
The 11 new Marriott Hotels opening in Canada in 2024
Here are the eleven hotels planned for 2024 in order of their anticipated opening date.

HIGHLIGHTS:
Moxy Halifax Downtown
This hotel was highlighted in last year’s post but we’ll highlight again as it just officially opened as the first Moxy Hotel in Canada on January 18, 2024.
It is a new build in downtown Halifax near the waterfront and features 160 rooms. The rooms come with one or two queens, one king, a queen and twin bunks or you’ll be able to have one with four twin bunks! They range from 210 to 280 square feet in size while one king studios are 380 square feet.
For amenities the Moxy Halifax offers a fitness centre and dining wise there is the Bar Moxy and 24/7 Grab-N-Go. Bar Moxy offers breakfast, lunch and dinner, will see live DJ’s on the weekends and serves up hand crafted cocktails and shareable small plates.

At the time of posting this article cash rates for the first couple of months of being open were in the low $200 to mid $300 range per night. In terms of award nights those first couple of months had rooms ranging from 20,000 to 35,000 points per night which makes this location perfect for using the annual free night award from the Marriott Bonvoy™ American Express®* Card or the Marriott Bonvoy™ Business American Express® Card (paying a $120 or $150 annual fee for a night that runs $200-$300 is a good way to save some money!)

Moxy Banff
We actually covered the Moxy Banff back in 2019 (read more here) when it was announced that it would be the first Moxy Hotel in Canada, but as you read above that didn’t happen, Halifax beat them to it by just over a month.
This location is not a new build but a complete renovation and revamp of the Banff Voyager Inn which had been welcoming guests since 1964. It is in part, the age of the building and issues that arise from being 60 years old that kept this hotel from opening sooner.
Here is how the Moxy Banff is described on Marriott’s site:
Moxy Banff is a bold mid-century design anchored in the centre by Bar Moxy and flanked on both sides by expansive rundle stone walls and unique precast guest wings that float over the parkades. The guest experience starts with a trip back in time as you enter the hotel to check in at Bar Moxy. Lit by an upside-down bear wearing headphones, the check-in experience sets the tone for the fun ahead as every guest receives a complimentary cocktail. The bar evokes a retro ski vibe with its racetrack design and chairlift-inspired liquor baskets. Bar Moxy’s doors open right onto the courtyard, a fun social space perfect for lounging by the fire or taking a dip in the hot pools. Hungry fun seekers will enjoy delicious apre’s and all-day menu from Bar Moxy’s fully restored ‘66 VW food truck
The hotel is owned and operated by Canalta Hotels who have stated there will be an outdoor heated pool and hot tub plus the rooftop bar will feature amazing views and fire pits so that guests will be able to enjoy it year round.
At the time of posting this article cash rates for the first couple of months of being open were in the mid $200 to mid $300 range per night. In terms of award nights those first couple of months had rooms ranging from 37,000 to 44,000 points per night. This means you can use the annual free night award from the Marriott Bonvoy™ American Express®* Card or the Marriott Bonvoy™ Business American Express® Card with an additional points top up. The free night awards covers 35,000 points so you would need an additional 12,000 to 19,000 points for a free night.

Wrapping it up
2024 will be a very similar year to 2023 in terms of new Marriott Hotel openings as we ended up seeing 10 new locations opened in 2023. As it stands 2024 will have 11 new hotels but that is subject to change as Marriott sometimes has new locations pop out of nowhere that haven’t been mentioned on their website or the various other sources we use to develop these lists! This year we can finally say however that the first Moxy Hotel in Canada has opened and it will be quickly followed by the second Moxy in Banff and two more of the brand in Montreal and Ottawa later on in the year.
