RWRDS Daily Update April 18: You can now fly direct from Calgary to Munich with Discover Airlines

You can now fly direct from Calgary to Munich with Discover Airlines

Here’s a friendly reminder to our readers in Calgary and surrounding areas about the new Discover Airlines route to Munich! The non-stop service inaugurated this past week on April 12 and RWRDS Canada had the pleasure of attending a special event here in YYC to celebrate it.

This route which we first brought you details of last June is being operated three time weekly with an Airbus A330-300 which features economy class, premium economy class and business class with lie flat seats. While it is starting out as a summer seasonal service the airline is optimistic that it can easily grow to a year round service with increased frequencies in the coming years. They noted that Munich is great hub for connecting to other regions in Europe, namely Italy and lauded how the airport tends to be easier to transfer at than Frankfurt

Earning points & miles on these flights

You can choose to credit these flights to Lufthansa’s own program, Miles&More but I would think most Canadians will opt to have these credited to their Air Canada Aeroplan account.

Miles&More does not have a co-brand credit card however you can book these flights on AirCanada.com so can use an Aeroplan co-brand card to pay for these flights – the best one is the American Express Aeroplan Reserve Card which earns 3 points per dollar for purchases made on Air Canada website.

If you don’t book via Air Canada your best bet is to pay with a card that has a travel accelerator like The Platinum Card from American Express or the American Express Gold Rewards Card as you can transfer those points to Aeroplan afterwards.

Booking these flights with points & miles

Through Aeroplan, Discover Airlines is not available for redemption, so your best bet is Miles & More or using a proprietary credit card program like Amex Membership Rewards, RBC Avion Rewards and so on to redeem points for these flights.

Muir Halifax upgrades from Autograph Collection to Luxury Collection

The Muir Hotel in Halifax which opened in late 2021 as Marriott Autograph Collection property is moving up the ranks as it now moved into Marriott’s Luxury Collection brand. The hotel is now officially known as the Muir, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Halifax. I don’t think anything has actually changed with the hotel outside of the name change.

However with the name change and move to this brand there should be some higher brand standards that the hotel must uphold and hopefully that will be the case here. When the hotel was an Autograph Collection hotel, it was considered more of an independent hotel that partook in Marriott’s sales channels and participating in Marriott Bonvoy program. It is still an independently owned hotel but hopefully with this switch they will strive to uphold more of the Marriott and Marriott Bonvoy promises. If you may recall, this hotel made headlines not too long ago with issues around (no) free breakfast for Bonvoy elites!

I haven’t checked yet but I’ll also be curious to see if this will mean a bump up in the general number of points required for free nights here. Let me know in the comments below if you do see this!
