Does it make sense to buy Mileage Plan miles?

Yes in many cases it does! Those cases tend to be for premium cabin redemptions (business or first class) on Alaska’s partner airlines. For example, we’ll look at our Award Availability Alert from last week with a round trip business class flight between Vancouver and Fiji on Fiji Airways towards the end of this summer:

If you don’t have any Mileage Plan miles at all you can purchase 70,000 for US$2069.38 and you’ll receive 42,000 miles extra from the bonus promotion:

The US$2,069 works out to around C$2,730 plus you have to pay GST/HST as the purchase is processed by Points.com which are a Canadian company. So you are looking at roughly $2,860 to $3,085 in total to purchase the miles. Add in the US$119.25 in taxes/fees on the actual reward ticket and your grand total will be around $3,020 to $3,245 for this flight. Compare this to C$6896.56 if you were to buy this same flight directly from Fiji Airways.

As you can see you would be paying less than 50% of the cash cost of this flight and it is great way to save some cash if you are in the market for this type of opportunity!
