Air Canada Elite Members can receive a status boost with a new American Express®* Aeroplan® Reserve Card

Air Canada and American Express have sweetened the pot on the American Express®* Aeroplan® Reserve Card for elite status members! Not only can you earn the welcome bonus of up to 85,000 points, elite members can now also earn 15,000 SQM and 20 eUpgrade credits when applying and being approved for the card and by meeting a points earning requirement.

How to earn the 15,000 SQM and 20 eUpgrade credits:

The process for Air Canada Elites to earn the 15,000 SQM and 20 eUpgrade credits status boost with this offer is as follows:

Step 1:

Register for the offer here.

Step 2:

Apply for the American Express®* Aeroplan® Reserve Card here (subject to approval).***

Step 3:

Get 20 eUpgrade credits and 15,000 SQM by earning 20,000 Aeroplan points using your card, posted into your account by July 31, 2024.

Points are earned as follows:

    • 3 points per dollar on Air Canada and Air Canada Vacations purchases.
    • 2 points per dollar on dining and food delivery plus Rocky Mountaineer rail excursions.
    • 1.25 points on all other purchases

Taking those earn rates into account it will take anywhere from $6,667 to $16,000 in spending to receive the status boost. Spending on supplementary cards also counts towards the points earning requirement.

***The Aeroplan Number that is included in American Express®* Aeroplan® Reserve Card application must match the Aeroplan Number linked to email on file with Air Canada and registered for the Elite Status Offer.

The up to 85,000 Aeroplan Points bonus

New American Express® Aeroplan®* Reserve Cardmembers can earn up to 85,000 welcome bonus points as follows:

  • Earn 60,000 Aeroplan points after spending $7,500 in purchases on your Card within the first 3 months
  • Plus, earn an additional 25,000 Aeroplan points when you spend $2,500 in purchases in month 13

Spend + earn example

Say you spend $3,500 on Air Canada flights in Mat and then another $3,500 on flights in June. That $7,000 will earn you the status boost ($7,000 x 3 = 21,000 points) plus you’ll earn the 60,000 points from part one of the welcome bonus if you spend $500 more on the card. All told you will have 80,000 Aeroplan points, 15,000 SQM and 20 eUpgrade credits if you brought this example to fruition. That does not include points from any other spending you may put on the card during this time.

After that you just need to make sure to spent $2,500 on the card in your 13th month of having it to score the final 25,000 points of the welcome bonus.

That’s just one spend example, the spending will vary by individual and please know that at a minimum you should be prepared to spend up to $16,000 on the card in the first three months so that you can earn the elite status boost.

Tips

#1. The points earned from the credit card spending need to post to your Aeroplan account on or before July 31. This means you need to make sure you reach your required spending prior to your statement date in July so that there is enough time for the points to post from American Express to Aeroplan. I would go so far as to say that if your statement cycle ends late July you should make every attempt to reach 20,000 points worth of spending by the end of your statement cycle in June just to be safe.

Here’s the direct wording from the terms and conditions of this offer:

Please note that points earned with your eligible American Express®* Aeroplan® Reserve Card are deposited to your Aeroplan account a few days after the end of the credit card account billing period. As a result, it is possible that transactions charged to your card towards the end of the Offer Period will translate into Aeroplan point deposits after the Offer Period and will not count towards this Offer.

#2. Want to know where you can earn 2 points per dollar on dining and food delivery? Check out our American Express Cobalt Card Confirmed Multiplier Locations and search for dining locations offering 5x points – most of those will count as 2x points on the Amex Aeroplan Reserve card

#3. Any portion of the 85,000 welcome bonus points from the card do not count towards the requirement of earning 20,000 points for the elite status boost.

#4. Apply sooner than later as you want to ensure you have enough time to be able to spend the $6,667 to $16,000 on your card and have the points post before July 31.
