Aeroplan cuts earn rates for Starbucks App reloads

Aeroplan has quietly changed the earn rates when you reload funds to your Starbucks account. Long time Rewards Canada reader Paul M. alerted us to this change on Twitter. The earn rates have taken a pretty big cut from when the partnership first launched about a year and a half ago.

The Old Earn Rates

Here is what Aeroplan members earned at Starbucks up until at least September 20 as I still earned 150 points when I had a reload on that day.

  • Earn 75 Aeroplan points each time you load or reload $50 up to $74.99 to your Starbucks Card.
  • Earn 150 Aeroplan points each time you load or reload $75 or more to your Starbucks Card.

The New Earn Rates

The new earn rate as found on the Air Canada website and noted by Paul in his tweet to us is now 100 points each time you load or reload $75 or more to your Starbucks Card.

Update: Aeroplan will continue to award points for reloads of $50 to $74.99 – it will now be 25 points instead of 50 points.

  • Earn 25 Aeroplan points each time you load or reload $50 up to $74.99 to your Starbucks Card.
  • Earn 100 Aeroplan points each time you load or reload $75 or more to your Starbucks Card.

Wrapping it up

It is always frustrating when a program makes a change – especially a negative one without any notice. I mean positive changes they almost always provide notice as it generates a buzz. Some programs do give notice of the not so good changes. I mean Aeroplan did let us know ahead of time of the recent increases to some of their partner flight rewards but in this case with Starbucks there was nothing. At least I didn’t receive or see anything, and it seemed to come to a surprise to Paul as well so I’m willing to guess they haven’t told Aeroplan members yet about this change.
