Air France KLM Flying Blue‘s Promo Rewards are out now for the month of September! This month they include 25% off economy class from Ottawa to Europe, North Africa and Turkey.

Ottawa: 25% off Air France economy class to Europe, North Africa, Turkey
!!! NOTE: I have reached out to Air France KLM as there seems to be a discrepancy in the Promo Rewards from Ottawa. The standard base redemption is 15,000 miles for Ottawa to Europe so 25% off should have these rewards start at 11,250 miles (as we have seen in previous Promo Rewards and as we see with New York rewards this month) however they have published the offer as 25% off rewards starting at 15,000 miles. Such was the case when I searched for availability, the lowest available rewards all started at 15,000 miles.
Either there is an error on their end, or they didn’t have any availability at the 15,000 mile level at all when they planned this set of rewards and 20,000 was the next lowest and published accordingly. There is also the possibility they have bumped up the minimum redemption out of YOW to 20,000 miles. I’ll provide an update once I hear back from AF KLM.
Availability
When you do search flights the mileage amounts will vary depending on which destinations you choose in Europe, North Africa or Turkey. As well the dates play a big part in finding those lowest amounts.
Availability from Ottawa to Paris at the 15,000 mile level (which is hopefully drops to 11,250 in the coming days if there is an error) is ok but not great over the coming months. Here’s a snapshot of availability in October:
Return flights from Paris to Ottawa were very sparse. For example there was only one day in November showing 15,000 miles, two in January and four in February.
Booking and travel dates:
You can book these rewards right through to September 30 on the Air France or KLM websites. You can travel on these offers anytime between now and March 31, 2024
Depending on where and when you are travelling you may have to get creative with your routing due to the limited availability of the offers. You can look at flying one way into one city and then returning from another and try to be flexible with your travel dates.
Transfer from American Express Membership Rewards
If you don’t have the Air France KLM World Elite Mastercard your best option is to convert American Express Membership Rewards points to Flying Blue Miles. The transfers are typically near-instant but American Express does state they can take up to 3 days.
Membership Rewards points transfer at a 1 to 0.75 ratio to Flying Blue. Which means you’ll need to transfer as little as 20,000 points for a one way economy class flight or 40,000 points for round trip – assuming these rewards stay at 15,000 miles each way. To put this in perspective, Amex’s own Fixed Points for travel requires 60,000 points and a lot more cash for the taxes and fees. And with Aeroplan you are looking at 60,000 to 70,000 points (60,000 to 70,000 Membership Rewards points) and comparable fees as Aeroplan does not include you first checked bag.
Even with the 1 to 0.75 ratio this represent an absolutely amazing redemption option for your Membership Rewards points. This especially true for the American Express Cobalt Card if you earned most or all of your points at the 5x level. If you are able to redeem for a round trip economy class flight for 40,000 Membership Rewards points (or 30,000 if the rewards do drop to 11,250 miles each way) it represents a very low $6,000 to $8,000 in 5x points spending. There is no way you can even come close to getting a redemption like this for that little amount spending with any other credit card in Canada.
Wrapping it up
This month’s Air France KLM Flying Blue’s Promo Rewards feature 25% off economy class flights out of Ottawa. However there seems to be a discrepancy in the actual mileage amount required as they are advertising the 25% off rewards as starting at 15,000 miles – an amount that is supposed to be the minimum redemption requirement without the 25% off.
