Preferred Hotel Group has this awesome offer that is only bookable on
today, Cyber Monday November 29th. They will award 30,000 bonus I Prefer
points for stays of 2 or more nights that are booked with this offer.
Those 30,000 points are enough to redeem for 1 night at their 30,000
point level hotels but they even have some 15,000 point hotels so you
could earn two free nights for your stay of two nights. It is a tougher bonus for Canadians to achieve if you aren’t traveling outside of Canada as none of their Canadian properties are part of the bonus offer. However if you are traveling to places like Mexico this may be something to check out. There are 82 I Prefer hotels and resorts listed in the offer
and surprisingly there are few of them price out well below US$100 per
night – in fact one we checked, the Lancaster Hotel in Bangkok was only
$53 per night. There are some hotels in Mexico in the $50 to $60 range
and even some U.S. hotels priced out just above $100 per night in
Chicago and Denver. This is one promotion where you could pull real good
value out of it if you find the right hotel to stay at.
From a few searches we conducted those 30K points can then be
redeemed for stays with a value of $150 to $200. Here’s one example of a
30,000 points redemption for a room at the Lorenzo Hotel Dallas that
costs $195 for that same night:
And here’s what Davidd418 passed along to us about the potential hotels you could earn this bonus at in Mexico:
Taking a quick look at the program and hotel chain of the 58 hotels
in Mexico only 5 of the hotels are participating in the Cyber promotion
this Monday. Only 3 of those 5 hotels are priced in the 52 – 76 USD a
night range. The hotels are similarly priced with the nearby hotels but
none of them seem to offer an included breakfast which many of their
nearby competition does offer, so that is something to keep in mind. Now
all three cities are decent if you’re looking for a more affordable
Mexican vacation and looking to take advantage of the promotion. The
hotels in Leon and Tampico do have a pool but if I had to choose myself
or recommend one of the three hotels I would stay at and recommend the
one in Leon for this promotion. If I can fit in a trip back to Leon, MX
this December I’ll see if I can take advantage of this promotion and
give you guys an update once the points post.
Why the hotel in Leon? well, it seems to be the best deal not just
because it’s the cheapest hotel in the entire promotion but because of
the location of the hotel within the city. The hotel in Leon is right
next to a shopping mall with restaurants and the Cineopolis movie
theatre which can make staying at that hotel worth it if you just want
to relax for two days with a pool, nearby shopping and not having to
spend as much on hotel food… since there are many restaurants within
walking distance. Another positive is Cineopolis actually offers a lot
of its movies in English with Spanish subtitles which is great if you’re
still trying to improve your Spanish. Movies in Mexico are pretty
affordably priced compared to seeing the same films in Canada with
prices often between 3 – 5 CAD a person. The city of Leon and the
surrounding areas are worth staying more than two nights and it’s not a
bad place to hotel hop between the different hotel chains depending on
what you want to see and your travel itinerary. They have a wonderful
history museum, historic town center, some decent cafes and the airport
has direct flights to the USA making connections to Canada really easy.
The airport is small but just large enough that there is a Priority Pass
lounge. The bus terminal is one of the better ones I have been to in
Mexico and within walking distance of a Holiday Inn and Hampton Inn
which occasionally have promotions too.
My second choice would be Tampico but it’s not the best location
within the city for walking anywhere and it’s actually a block or two
from the Hampton Inn which has breakfast included and happens to be one
of the few hotels in the world within the Hilton rewards program that
still goes for 5000 points a night… making the Hampton probably the
better choice for a stay of any length in Tampico. The 5000 point
redemptions are a remnant of when Hilton still had reward charts.
Staying 5 nights at that Hampton Inn would only cost 20000 points with
the 5th night being free. It’s a really cheap almost free way of
building up status if you’re short a few nights for the year. I can’t
see the average tourist wanting to stay more than 5 nights in Tampico.
Plus if part of the reason for visiting Tampico is to build up nights
for Hilton status staying at another property just means you’re stuck in
Tampico longer during your vacation but there is a pool which I believe
the Hampton Inn does not have but I don’t need any more nights with
Hilton this year… so that’s why it would be my second choice for this
promotion if I were to stay a couple of nights in Tampico.
