Avianca LifeMiles is once again offering discounted award flights on
select Star Alliance routes. These offers are available for booking
until October 11, 2021. Remember that right now you can buy LifeMiles with a 150% bonus via the OMAAT offer
which you can combine with this award sale as that sale runs until
October 15. The best options are the business class flights between
North America and Asia that are now available for 60,000 to 64,000
LifeMiles one way. This includes Vancouver to Taipei at the 64,000 mile level. There is one
other Canadian option and that is Toronto-San Francisco in Business
Class for 20,000 miles each way. You can buy 128,000 miles (52,000 + 150% bonus) for US$1716
which would get
you round trip flights between Vancouver and Taipei
in business class. That’s a really good price to pay for those flights!
The only question is…. can you find availability?
I posted this offer on our global site earlier but without doing any award flight searches. I figured for here on Rewards Canada I would provide some examples of this discounted award flight sale for the Canadian routes that are included. I searched high and low for availability on Vancouver to Taipei and Toronto to San Francisco. I couldn’t find one day with availability. Now I didn’t check every day for a year but I did look for weeks on end over various months close in and far out from now and I simply wasn’t able to find any availability. So I decided to try a U.S. to Asia route and voila! On my first try I was able to pull up the sale for flights between Los Angeles and Tokyo:
The sale is there, 64,000 miles for business class plus US$24.70 in taxes.
How does this compare to Aeroplan? The same route is 75,000 Aeroplan Miles plus C$47 in fees (this includes the $39 partner booking fee)
So which is better seeing that both airlines have a buy miles bonus right now?
Well with LifeMiles’ 150% bonus you only have to buy 26,000 miles and you’ll end up with 65,000 miles:
The cost is US$858 or about C$1,090 and with Aeroplan you would have to buy 50,000 Miles for the redemption on the same route:
When you add in the taxes and fees on award flights you are looking at about $1,120 with LifeMiles versus $1,547 with Air Canada – granted you’ll still have 5,000 Aeroplan points leftover versus 1,000 left over with LifeMiles and you are saving over $400 with LifeMiles.
Wrapping it up
The current LifeMiles award flight sale on select Star Alliance routes when combined with One Mile at a Time’s 150% bonus on buying LifeMiles makes for a very valuable combination.
