Earlier today we brought you the news about the changes to the American Express Cobalt Card but the changes didn’t end with only that card. The other card in Amex’s Membership Rewards Select category, the Choice Card from American Express™ is undergoing some changes as well. The big one being the name and look of the card. American Express is bringing back their iconic Green Card by changing the Choice Card to the card that was first introduced in 1969 (Although this one has a microchip in it!)
Outside of the name change and the look of the card there is only one other new enhancement to this card which was also add to the Cobalt card (this wording is direct from Amex):
- Membership Rewards Select Tier Cardmembers will now have the new option to transfer points to airline frequent flyer programs.
This is a big boost to this card as it is the only no annual fee Membership Rewards Card in Amex’s portfolio and will allow cardholders to take advantage of all of Amex’s great redemption options. It’s really a card to consider if you are looking at just getting started with Amex or have a Visa and/or Mastercard as your primary payment card but want to add an Amex card to your portfolio for the exclusive offers that come from American Express. It’s a nice easy way to earn 1 Membership Rewards points per dollar spent which also equates to 1 Aeroplan point or British Airways Executive Club Avios, 1.2 Marriott Bonvoy points, 1 Hilton Honors point and then .75 miles/points with Amex’s other airline transfer partners.
Remember as well that earlier in the spring American Express updated their Use Points for Purchases (Cash Back option) to be 1,000 points equals $10 instead of 1,000 points for $7. That means this card earns a straight 1% cash back for those who like that redemption option.
Just like the changes on the Cobalt Card these changes take place on August 16, 2021. Cardmembers will receive the NEW American Express Green Card once their current Choice Card expires.
