With over 7,000 hotels Marriott Hotels is one of the largest hotel companies in the world and they are one of the biggest in Canada. The chain comprises of a whopping 30 brands ranging from mid-level budget locations to high end luxury resorts.
Marriott is looking to add no less than ten more hotels to their Canadian portfolio in 2021. This is about two thirds of the number of locations they opened in 2020 and less than half of what they opened in 2019. Overall these nine hotels will bring their portfolio to nearly 270 properties in Canada. On the list for openings this year is the W Toronto which was originally set to open last year however a construction slow down due to the pandemic pushed the opening back by nearly 12 months. I assume the same goes for the Fairfield Inn & Suites Orillia as that hotel was also on last year’s list.

Borrowing a line from last year’s post I would say the most anticipated hotel opening will be the W Toronto. According to Marriott’s site the W is slated to open in June however nights are not bookable until July 1 which makes sense, why not open up the hotel on Canada Day, it’s a great way to celebrate.

The W Toronto will have 255 rooms on 9 floors and is located in the
Yorkville neighbourhood at 90 Bloor Street East. The hotel will open as a
Category 6 hotel in the Marriott Bonvoy program meaning you’ll require
50,000 points per night at the standard level (40,000 off peak/60,000
peak). This unfortunately means it will be out of reach for the annual
free night award that comes with the Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card
– however the welcome bonus on the card is 50,000 points so that could
be utilized for one night at this new location. There is availability throughout July with mostly Standard night awards, one Peak night and three off peak nights that you’ll see are pricing even less thanks to Marriott offering a 10% discount on off peak reward nights that are booked by February 15:
On one of the nights that is only 36,000 points you would be redeeming for a
room that costs $574 ($489+taxes) which means your redemption value would be 1.59 cents
per point. Here at Rewards Canada we value Marriott Bonvoy points at a minimum
of 1 cent each so this would be considered a good points redemption. On
50,000 point nights the going rate seems to be $519 so it still a little
over 1 cent per point.

I would say the next highly anticipated opening is the Humaniti Hotel
Montreal which is part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection. Just like the W Toronto this hotel will be a Marriott Bonvoy Category 6 property putting it out of reach for annual free nights, unless you can find an off peak pointsavers rate. This hotel is being touted as a ‘city within a building’ and the first vertical smart community in Montreal. The hotel will have two towers and is designed by New York architect Andres Escobar. The 4.5 star hotel will encompass 11 floors of the building with king and two queen rooms plus some amazing king suites.

The city of Halifax is not to be out done by Toronto and Montreal as they will also get an Autograph Collection hotel this year. Situated on Halifax’s waterfront in the Queens Marque neighbourhood, Muir is being described as
“Refined and distinctly Nova Scotian luxury… Muir will offer a new hospitality experience expressing the essence of Nova Scotia through inspired design, exceptional amenities and warm, gracious service. …Guests will experience impeccable service and amenities and stay in refined, serene rooms with bespoke furniture and stunning ocean views. All inspired by the spirit, character, culture and natural beauty and bounty of Nova Scotia.”

The Muir will feature 110 rooms, a wellness centre and more (Rewards Canada Update July 29, 20) At the time of posting this Marriott had not released what category the hotel will fall under in the Bonvoy program. I am going to guess it will be Category 6 like the other two big openings this year but I am keeping my fingers crossed it will enter the market as a Category 5 hotel!

Another exciting new build is the Pearle Hotel & Spa in Burlington, Ontario. Yet another Autograph Collection hotel the hotel is named after the company founder’s grandmother and is right on the shores of Lake Ontario. The Pearle’s restaurant, named Isabelle (I wonder what relation Isabelle is) will have many of the ingredients sourced from their own earth to table farm. Its spa will feature a traditional Hammam sauna, private massage rooms and a relaxation pool. The hotel is owned by the same hospitality company that owns and runs the famous Elora Mill Hotel & Spa.
If you are planning on staying at any one of these new hotels or any Marriott Hotel for that matter remember to use a card like the Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card to pay for that stay as it will earn you 5 points per dollar spent at Marriott Hotels and this includes dining and other hotel spending so long as you bill it to your room. Also temember to take advantage of all the possible Marriott Bonvoy bonus
points offers that are available to members of the program. At the time of posting this feature the primary Marriott promotion is Double Bonvoy Points and Double Elite Night credit for each stay of 2 or more nights (Feb 16 – Apr 27, 21). However Marriott does run other promotions as well but those can be hard to find on their site but no worry as we do the legwork for you by finding and listng those offers on our Marriott Bonvoy Bonus Points page.
