Westin Singapore

Hotel Review: The Westin Singapore

The next part of my eight day journey across Asia saw me arrive into Singapore Changi at 10am after a 7-hour flight from Abu Dhabi on Etihad Airways. Once out of the airport I took a Grab ride (similar to Uber) to The Westin Singapore. The ride took about 25 minutes and cost approximately 20 CAD. Upon reaching the hotel, I discovered it is conveniently located within walking distance to both Marina Bay and Chinatown. The hotel is nestled within a commercial tower in a bustling business center and boasts an impressive location.

Additional posts from my whirlwind 8 day tour of Asia:

Arrival

Upon entering the building, you have to take the elevator to the 32nd floor to reach the hotel lobby. The lobby was impressive, with its high ceilings and expansive windows offering a captivating view of the harbor. The lounge and restaurant area are split to the left, with the check-in counters to the right.

Check-In

Arriving at the hotel around 10:30 AM, I was greeted by a friendly employee, who welcomed me to The Westin Singapore hotel. The interaction was delightful, with the employee displaying genuine engagement. Expressing my intention to check in early, I was met with a reassuring response that my room was ready. The employee took the time to detail the benefits I could enjoy during my stay, including access to the executive lounge on the 35th floor. Additionally, I was given a choice between earning points or indulging in a buffet-style breakfast at the restaurant. Given the personal nature of my stay and the upcoming flight, I opted for the latter, as I was famished! She even offered me a late check-out but as my flight was early the next day, I politely declined.

To my delight, I was offered an upgraded room with a view—a gesture that I greatly appreciated. Throughout my travels in Asia, I’ve consistently observed the remarkable level of interaction and upgrades extended to Marriott elite members, and this experience was no exception.

Guest Room

Upon entering my room, there was a L-shaped hallway that lead to the bedroom, effectively distancing the room from the entrance. This corner one-bedroom space had a partial view of Marina Bay and the harbour front, yet was enveloped by surrounding office buildings, with the potential of looking into the room. To ensure privacy, there are automated blinds.

The room boasted a contemporary design, housing a spacious queen-sized bed and a corner working desk. Positioned before the windows, a sizable TV added to the modern setup. The bathroom had a beautiful bathtub, which over looked the harbour—a perfect setting for a soothing bath. Additionally, there is an enclosed shower within the elegant and modern bathroom. Overall, the room was generously proportioned and packed with numerous exceptional amenities.

Amenities

The Westin Singapore Hotel provides a lot of amenities for guests to enjoy. On the 35th floor, there’s a fitness center, spa, executive lounge, and outdoor pool. The fitness center, though relatively small, offered a view of the harbor from the cardio machines, and it had a reasonably good selection of weight equipment. I went to the fitness center for a workout around 6:00 AM; while there were a few early risers, I had to wait to use some of the equipment , which wasn’t ideal for those with tight schedules. The outdoor pool was a highlight, stretching along the building’s corner, providing a generously sized area with ample seating.

Executive Lounge

As for the Executive Lounge, it wasn’t what I expected, in comparison to the others I’ve experienced. There was a modest selection of breakfast items, which included hot options and appetizers for the later afternoon. While I didn’t spend much time here during this trip, it struck me as sufficient for business travelers seeking a comfortable space.

There’s no experience like indulging in a complimentary breakfast at the restaurant, where a lavish buffet of delectable dishes awaits. The complimentary breakfast provided to Marriott Bonvoy Elite members is significantly superior here compared to what is offered in Canada. The array of breakfast cuisines offered was incredibly diverse. One of the privileges I greatly appreciate as a Marriott Bonvoy Elite member is the opportunity to enjoy a complimentary breakfast. I suggest choosing the restaurant breakfast over the lounge option.

Wrapping it up

Overall this hotel provided a fantastic experience for my short stay. It is conveniently located within walking distance of numerous attractions and popular eateries. Moreover, a building adjacent to it housed an impressive food court and a Starbucks. The service from the staff was exceptional, and the value of my one night at the hotel in terms of points was outstanding.

The cash rate for my stay was roughly $694 CAD but points wise they were only asking for 33,000 points. So I utilized the complimentary annual free night award from my Marriott Bonvoy™ American Express®* Card which covers free nights of up to 35,000 points to pay for this stay. This single redemption alone paid for the credit card’s annual fee 5 times over and more!

Award night details:

Points required for a free night: 31,000 to 59,000 points

Marriott Bonvoy does not publish award night charts anymore as they have moved to dynamic pricing. Looking at the next five months The Westin Singapore’s standard free night awards run between 31,000 and 59,000 points per night. This means you can use the free night award from the Marriott Bonvoy™ American Express®* Card or Marriott Bonvoy™ Business American Express® Card (just as Dee did) on those nights that are 35,000 points or lower. You can even choose to use it with the points top off option to cover those nights that are higher. Since you can add up to 15,000 points extra you can combine the free night award with points to cover free nights of up to 50,000 points.
