Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan Award Chart Changes
Alaska Airlines is making big news today across all the points and miles sites and blogs. They have published a notice on the Mileage Plan Award Charts page that changes are coming. They start it if with ‘good news’ in that Cathay Pacific and LATAM awards will be available for booking online before the end of the year. No more needing to call in to book those flights. That is good news but they go on to say the following:
Starting late December, the way you view award charts online is changing. We’ll have a simplified award chart to show you where award levels start based on which regions you’re traveling from and to. With this change, similar to awards on Alaska, partner award levels may vary depending on multiple factors including route, distance, or demand
This is not good news. The bolding is mine and what this sentence means is that dynamic pricing is coming to Alaska’s partner airline redemptions that will be consistent among all partners. These have historically been some of the best award options in the industry to fly in premium cabins on some of the great airlines in the world, namely Cathay Pacific, Japan Airlines and Korean Air.
Most airline frequent flyer programs have moved to dynamic pricing over the past decade or so however Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan was, for the most part, a hold out. They kept amazing value in the program by having set award chart redemption rates for many of their partners. It appears this will end in December and while dynamic pricing can work both ways, that is sometimes you may be able to redeem less miles for flights than before, in the majority of cases it means you’ll spending more miles now to redeem for flights.
It really is unfortunate news from Alaska and you can bet we’ll have more coverage as the December draws closer. In the meantime, if you have been planning to book some Mileage Plan award flights on Alaska’s partner airlines I would recommend doing it now, or at least by early December to lock the set award chart pricing. This will keep from spending more miles than you have to and should your flights actually end costing less miles after they switch to dynamic pricing you can always cancel and re-book them.
