Here’s your Rewards Canada update! Your near daily dose of loyalty program, credit card and travel news, bonuses, deals and more.

Massive Emirates Skywards Devaluation

Over the course of the past week or so Ben at One Mile at a Time has been documenting the extremely severe and unannounced devaluation from Emirates Skywards. Rather than rehash it all here, I recommend you read his post here on how business and first class rewards have increased in cost.

On top of this the airline’s extremely popular fifth freedom flights between the U.S. and Europe have been decimated by mileage increases of nearly 100% and a huge a jump in the surcharges being levied, and by huge we mean from the likes of 150 Euros to over 1000 Euros. For those who like using Skywards out of Toronto you’ll note that a business class redemption now requires nearly the same amount of miles as what a first class reward cost prior to the devaluation.

For the time being, if you do want to fly an Emirates premium class your best bet continues to be Air Canada Aeroplan.
