Could we see WestJet fly to Japan in 2023?

Earlier this year WestJet stated they were going to make Calgary their global hub by positioning all their Boeing 787 Dreamliners at YYC by summer 2023.

WestJet will designate YYC Calgary International Airport as its single global connecting hub and will concentrate all intercontinental 787 Dreamliner flying in Calgary, unlocking opportunity for new routes within North America, to Europe, with the potential to reach Asia

It appears that potential reach to Asia is one step closer to reality. On November 30 the Calgary based airline received approval from the Canadian Transport Agency to operate flights to Japan. Now, many airlines do receive approval to operate routes and never end up doing so but I have a feeling this won’t be the case here.

WestJet just recently expanded their code share with JAL Japan Airlines that now sees WestJet selling tickets with their own flight numbers on JAL flights between Vancouver and Tokyo. The next logical step in this partnership would be for WestJet to fly Calgary to Tokyo with JAL codesharing on that flight to help fill the seats. Calgary hasn’t seen direct flights to Tokyo since Air Canada dropped the route several years ago so it would be nice to see the return of a direct flight to Asia. (HT Jim Byers)
