United Airlines

United adding flights from Halifax to Newark and Vancouver to Washington D.C.

What do American Airlines, Delta Airlines and United Airlines all have in common? They all return to Halifax in 2024! First out of the gate was American, then Delta and now United will be returning to YHZ. United will offer flights between Halifax and their hub in Newark starting in May. The airline will also be resuming non-stops flights between Vancouver and Washington Dulles.

Halifax – Newark

This route will be operated twice daily starting on May 23, 2024 with Republic Airways Embraer E175 aircraft. Flights are timed for easy connections in Newark for United’s morning and evening departure banks out of EWR to cities across the U.S., to Europe and more.

Vancouver – Washington Dulles

This route will be operated once daily from May 2 to September 25,  2024 with a United 737 Max 8. This one comes as a bit of a surprise as Air Canada just started flying this route in June of 2023. I guess there is enough demand over summer to warrant an additional Star Alliance flight!

Booking these flights with points & miles

As these are United flights, you can use United MileagePlus miles to redeem for these flights. It looks like they start around 15,000 miles one way for Economy Class from Halifax to Newark and 17,000 from Vancouver to Washington D.C. (although United has the Air Canada flight for as low as 16,500)

You should also be able to use Aeroplan points for these flights however when I checked Aeroplan on a few dates in late May and throughout June I couldn’t get the direct non-stop United flights from either city to show – only Air Canada’s direct flights or AC connections to AC and UA flights.

Wrapping it up

2024 is seeing a huge resurgence of flights between Canada and the U.S. and in particular Halifax has seen lots of love! For travel between Canada and the U.S. we’ve seen American, Alaska and Delta all announce new routes while Air Canada and WestJet have added a lot of capacity and new routes as well. Now we have United in the mix as well. This summer should be a good one for traveling down south from across Canada.
