Here’s your RWRDS Canada update! Your near daily dose of loyalty program, credit card and travel news, bonuses, deals and more.

Air Canada raises checked bag fees

It didn’t take Air Canada very long to follow in WestJet’s footsteps (and many U.S. airlines) in raising their checked bag fees. For fares in in North America, the Caribbean, and Central America the minimum fee for the first checked bag fee has been increased by $5 to $35.

Of course you can avoid these fees by not checking bags, paying for a higher fare class or do what many people do who fly Air Canada at least once per year with their family or multiple times per year as a solo traveller, and that is get themselves the an Air Canada co-brand credit card such as the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card as the $139 annual fee easily pays for itself when checking bags for multiple passengers. A family of four are now looking at $140 per direction for checked bags!

Higher Ed Points, where you could use points to pay for tuition has shut down

Higher Ed Points, which was an innovative concept that provided Canadians with an option to redeem points and miles to help pay for their post-secondary tuition and student loans, has shut down. The company launched in 2013 and grew to have partnerships with Air Canada Aeroplan, CIBC Aventura Rewards, TD Rewards and American Express Membership Rewards.

Rewards Canada had the pleasure of working numerous times with Higher Ed Points up until 2021 at which point a company called Flywire purchased Higher Ed Points. That company has now decided to close down Higher Ed Points.

This is  unfortunate news as HEP was a unique way to use your points and miles that proved popular with many Canadians. Suzanne Tyson, the original founder of Higher Ed Points, stated “We helped thousands of students fund millions of dollars of tuition and student loan repayments in Canada using loyalty points
