Air Canada removes free seat selection option at check in on basic and standard economy fares
APRIL 26 2:15pm MT UPDATE: According to Open Jaw, Air Canada is pausing the implementation of this new policy:
“We have paused the implementation for operational reasons to ensure a smooth rollout for our customers and employees, and we will communicate next steps further at the appropriate time,” officials said in a statement sent to Open Jaw.
If you are flying on a cheaper economy class fare with Air Canada (Basic or Standard) you can no longer select seats for free during the 24 check in period prior to your flight. Air Canada will now automatically assign you seats and if you want a different seat you will need to pay for it. Thus if you are travelling with multiple people on the same reservation there is a possibility you will not be seated together if you choose to forego paying for your seats in advance. For comparison, WestJet also has the same policy but only on their basic economy fares, the next fare up, Econo still includes free seat selection during check in.
This is unfortunate news for those who do book the lower economy class fares and have relied on the 24 hour check in window to be able to pick seats with no charge. If you hold Air Canada Elite status you can still select seats at no charge and select international routes will stil have free seat selection for all travellers.
I wouldn’t be surprised if we see “free seat selection at check-in” added as a new benefit to the premium and ultra premium Air Canada Aeroplan co-brand credit cards in the near future!
