Back in April Coast Hotels announced plans to accelerate growth of their U.S. expansion and today we see the first move from the Canadian based hotel operator. The 256 room Hilton Seattle has been acquired by Coast’s parent company, APA Hotels and it is immediately being rebranded as the Coast Seattle Downtown Hotel by APA! Yes, by immediate it means you can book it for a stay tonight if you like!
“In acquiring this property in Seattle, APA Hotel Co., Ltd, and APA Hotel USA, Inc. take its first monumental step into the vibrant hospitality landscape of the United States,” states Isshi Motoya, CEO of APA Group. “This strategic move aligns with our vision for expansion and exponential growth across North America. We are very excited to transform the property into the Coast Seattle Downtown Hotel by APA”
This was a faster than expected move by Coast Hotels! When I attended and spoke at their hotel brand conference in late April, they did state the first part of their expansion would be an acquisition to get the ball rolling – but I don’t think any of us (at least guests, suppliers and non-management) had any clue it would be this soon. This is great news for the brand and for Coast Rewards members travelling to Seattle as they haven’t had a central Seattle location for several years now. It doesn’t hurt either that one of Coast Hotels Coast Rewards primary partners is Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan!

Utilizing Coast Rewards Points
Coast Hotels Stays
Coast Rewards has a simplified redemption structure for stays at their hotels. They moved away from redeeming for a free night voucher to a points for a $ discount structure. This is similar to programs like ALL Accor Live Limitless and several other hotel chains.
The program now provides a flat $0.04 CAD redemption value per point when redeemed towards Coast Hotels stays. As soon as a member has a minimum 250 points in their account they can redeem that 250 points for a $10 credit towards their hotel bill.
Members can either check the “Pay with Points” box or “enter a custom amount of points” and enter the available amount of Points they wish to apply and redeem. The Member will be responsible for paying any leftover balance when they check out. Any remaining, unused Coast Rewards Points can be applied to a future reservation prior to their expiration.
With the double points bonus members are essentially earning 0.8 cents to 2.4 cents per dollar spent on their stays.
The great thing about this new redemption method is that you don’t have to wait until you have enough points to redeem for a free night. Now you can redeem them sooner and receive a discount towards your stay or if you do have enough points redeem them for the full charge of your stay and it will be free.
Convert to Aeroplan Points or Mileage Plan Miles
Coast Rewards points can be converted to Aeroplan or Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan at a 1:1 ratio which means you are earning 2 to 6 points/miles per dollar spent (with the 2x bonus) on your stays. You do need a minimum of 1,000 points to convert to either of these programs.
The program also typically offers a conversion bonus to Aeroplan at least once per year, sometimes more. Typically we see a 3x bonus however we have seen it as high as 4x! That means Platinum members who earn the double points and wait for the transfer bonus (fingers crossed we see it again soon) could be earning the equivalent of 18 to 24 Aeroplan points per dollar spent.
