News is just starting to trickle in that Lynx Air will be shutting down at the end of the upcoming weekend.
Here are the details as provided by Open Jaw:
An internal Lynx Air memo has been issued to staff advising that the carrier will cease operations as of Sunday, 25FEB.
The message, signed by Jim (Lynx’s COO, Jim Sullivan), states that Lynx was unable to secure investment in the ULCC to fund its rapid growth, and on 22FEB, it filed for protection from its creditors under a CCAA filing.
And the news has been posted to Lynx Air’s site:
Here is Lynx’s official statement:
Tremendous work was put into the growth and expansion of Lynx Air over the past two years, offering Canadians a low-cost, seamless travel experience for Canadians. However, the compounding financial pressures associated with inflation, fuel costs, exchange rates, cost of capital, regulatory costs and competitive tension in the Canadian market have ultimately proven too steep a mountain for our organization to overcome. It is with a heavy heart we leave the skies. We hope in our absence that our vision to Inspire More Canadians to Fly leaves its mark on our passengers.
For flights until Sunday, Lynx Air has stated they will try to operate the majority of them (that would scare me if I was booked with them and would be making other plans already!)
Our passengers are our priority, and to ensure we bring as many of our travellers home as possible, we will continue to operate the majority of our flights through this weekend. If your flight is cancelled, you will be notified via email. For the most up to date information, please refer to Flight Status Information | Lynx Air (flylynx.com).
If you have bookings with Lynx Air after February 25 you will want to start making other travel plans to ensure you can get to your destination. Lynx Air will not be issuing refunds but rather you will need to initiated a charge back through your credit card:
If your flight is for travel from Monday, February 26 onward, you can contact your credit card company and they will refund your flight. Please note: Lynx Air’s contact centre will not be available to assist with refunds.
If have you credits or vouchers with Lynx, you’re SOL:
Unfortunately, travel vouchers and flight vouchers will no longer be accepted once Lynx ceases operations.
Wrapping it up
Last week we had rumours of Flair and Lynx merging so either those were simply that, rumours, or the merger talks failed and now we see the demise of Lynx. We’ll update you if there is more news to provide but in the meantime if you have flights booked with Lynx you will need to start making alternate plans or have a back up plan if your flights are booked for this weekend with them.
