A big announcement today in the world of everyday points earning as Chexy and Aeroplan have teamed up to offer points on paying rent, taxes and other expenses.
Chexy is a Canadian Fintech that has enabled Canadians to pay their rent with credit cards for several years now and most recently has expanded into taxes and bill payments for companies that don’t accept credit cards. (See RWRDS Daily Update March 26). In a nutshell Chexy charges your credit card the amount of the payment you would like to make plus a 1.75% fee and then they make the e-transfer, pre-authorized debit or bill payment on your behalf.
Aeroplan on the other hand should need no introduction to the RWRDS Canada community but just in case you are new to world of loyalty rewards, not only is Aeroplan Canada’s preeminent frequent flyer program for our largest airline, Air Canada, it is also a mainstay everyday loyalty program for many Canadians who are not frequent flyers.
This new partnership enables Aeroplan members to earn points when utilizing Chexy services to pay rent, bills, and taxes with their credit card. There is also an exclusive launch offer that provides up to 10,000 bonus Aeroplan points for new Chexy users.
Exclusive launch offers for Aeroplan Members
Aeroplan members can earn up to 10,000 points in the first year of utilizing Chexy. The points are awarded as follows:
- Open a new Chexy account and make the first payment before July 15, 2025 and earn 2,000 points
- Earn an additional 1,000 points following the 12th consecutive monthly payment
- Earn 5,000 points after processing $5,000 in payments within 6 months of activating the first payment
- Earn 500 points for the second and each additional recurring payment (up to a total of four) made within 6 months of activating the first payment, up to 2,000 points
Note: All payments need to be a minimum of $50
Referral offer
Aeroplan members can earn up to 10,000 more points for referring people to Chexy:
- Earn 1000 points for each new Chexy user referral who completes a first $50+ payment (up to 10 referrals per Chexy account).
Wrapping it up
At a time when there is more and more discussion about loyalty programs, everyday purchases, and everyday value (RWRDS Canada Podcast Episode 121 for example) a partnership like this one between Aeroplan and Chexy fits the bill perfectly. The points and miles community will be excited to rack up those points to help fund some crazy Aeroplan redemptions but it is just as exciting for everyday Canadians who are simply looking to fly to a neighouring province to visit family and with flights like those starting at only 6,000 Aeroplan points, it won’t take very many rent, bill or tax payments to achieve award flight reality.

Recommended credit cards to use with Chexy
The great news with this partnership is you can use any American Express or Visa card with Chexy – it does not have to be an Aeroplan co-brand card to earn these extra Aeroplan points with Chexy. Here’s just some of the cards we’d recommend using:
Since we’re discussing Aeroplan, we’ll start with Aeroplan cards!
- American Express® Aeroplan®* Reserve Card | TD® Aeroplan® Visa Infinite Privilege* Card | CIBC Aeroplan® Visa Infinite Privilege* Card
These cards earn 1.25 points per dollar spent with Chexy. We give Aeroplan points a minimum value of 1.5 cents each so that equates to a 1.875% return on spending which is higher than the 1.75% charged by Chexy. But as we all know, the Aeroplan program provides the opportunity to earn more value per points depending on the redemption. 2, 3, 4 or more cents per points are achievable. So that 1.25 points can quickly become a 2.5%, 3.75%, 5% or higher return on your Chexy spending. And the good thing with any of these cards is that there are no spending caps on the 1.25 points earning. So if you have some big tax bills there’s a lot of earning potential here!
And here are some non-Aeroplan card options:
- Scotiabank Momentum® Visa* Infinite card
This card earns 4% cash back on recurring bills and Chexy codes as recurring bills! Withthis one the math is easy, you get 4% cash back and are paying 1.75% to pay via Chexy so you end up ahead by 2.25%. There are two potential downfalls to this card however, one is the $25,000 annual cap on the 4% earning and the other is only receiving your cash back once per year. With other programs/cards like Aeroplan, Amex Membership Rewards you have way easier access to your rewards. - Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card
This card earn 2 Marriott Bonvoy Points per dollar spent with Chexy. We give Bonvoy points a minimum valuation of 1 cent each so that equates to a 2% return on spending which is higher than the 1.75% charged by Chexy. Just like Aeroplan, there is the potential for even more value in Marriott Bonvoy points, we’ve had examples of getting 1.4, 1.7, 2 or even 3 or more cents per point. 3 cents per point at 2 points per dollar equates to a 6% return! And the Marriott card has no annual spending cap either so if you have a lot of big payments, this card is ideal just like the Aeroplan cards. - RBC Avion Visa Infinite Privilege Card
This cards earn 1.25 points per dollar spent with Chexy and while the Avion Rewards program only has a baseline value of 1 cent per point but can get up to 2.33 cents point with the Avion Air Redemption Schedule, there is the potential to extract value via the bank’s reward chart. Where you can guarantee yourself more value than the fee charged by Chexy is redeeming the points for business class or first class flights as Avion Rewards doubles the value of the points (1oo points = $2) which means a 2.5% return on spending. Not to mention you can convert the points to British Airways Club (and further transfer to Qatar, Iberia, Finnair, Aer Lingus) where you should be able to get a minimum value of at least 1.5 cents (just like Aeroplan)
That’s just a small sampling of the cards RWRDS Canada recommends using for Chexy payments. There are others of course where you can get more value from the points/miles/cash back than the 1.75% fee you pay.
Then there’s also the whole notion of using Chexy to meet the minimum spending requirement for new card welcome bonus offers. And with those MSRs ever increasing on a whole lot of cards, funneling spend through Chexy (even if the points are worth less than the 1.75% fee) makes for a good way to meet those requirements.
