RWRDS Daily Update March 25: Canalta Hotels adding locations in Cochrane and High River, Alberta

Canalta Hotels adding locations in Cochrane and High River

Canalta Hotels are continuing to expand their in-house hotel branding in Alberta. The Drumheller based hotelier will be converting two additional hotels they own to the Canalta Hotels brand.

As of April 1 the Ramada Cochrane and the Ramada High River will become the Canalta Cochrane and Canalta High River. This follows closely on the heels of the recent switch of their Ramada Airdrie to the Canalta Airdrie.

This is great news for Canalta Rewards members who are gaining extra locations to earn and redeem their points at. With these two hotels they will have a total of 25 Canalta Hotels locations operating in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

Still no word on what’s happening to Hudson’s Bay Rewards

If you have been following the news surrounding Hudson’s Bay you’ll know they are liquidating the company save for six locations in Ontario and Quebec. That’s a big loss for most of Canada, namely the 8+ million members of the Hudson’s Bay Rewards program. The program has been paused since the company went into creditor protection earlier this month so members have not been able to earn or redeem points.

And to this point there have been no updates as to what it going to happen with the program, but even if the program survives, it’s not going to be ideal for most members seeing there will only be six locations in Ontario and Quebec. For the majority of Canada the only hope will be being able to use the points for online purchases. Of course this is all speculation if the program survives.

With six stores it may not be very likely the program survives but from an online business stand point it would be smart for them to keep the program going. Yes, there may be a run on points redemptions if and when members can redeem again but there would also be a natural spill off of extra sales over and above the points being redeemed. Not to mention, it has the potential to keep some members to continue being loyal to the company. It’s well known within the loyalty industry that once a customer actually redeems for a reward, they tend to become even more loyal to the company, although this whole mess with HBC is a totally different story.

Also note that if you are holding on to Hudson’s Bay Gift Cards you have to use them by April 6!!!
