Clarifications on Air Canada Basic Fares for co-brand credit card holders

We’ve had several of our readers ask what exactly is covered or not covered with the first checked bag free benefit found on Aeroplan co-brand credit cards in regards to the changes coming to Air Canada Basic Fares. Air Canada now has an FAQ that answers the questions, which we have also listed below.

The one question that came up the most was for the core credit cardholders who do not have status and the answer there is you DO NOT get a free carry-on bag and a free checked bag when flying on a basic fare within North America or to Sun Destinations. The first checked bag free benefit can be applied to either or but not both. So if you are not checking luggage you can use the benefit to cover the fee for your carry-on bag.

Who gets what? The rules for elite members & co-brand credit card holders for these basic fares:

Core Credit Card + No Elite Status

The first checked bag free benefit for core credit card holders (TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card, CIBC Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card, American Express Aeroplan Card) who are not elite status members can apply their benefit to the carry on bag fee on basic fares or to their checked bag but not both

Aeroplan Core Credit Cardholders travelling on a Basic fare may bring one (1) personal article on board. The Aeroplan Credit Card benefits you enjoy today continue to apply. If your card offers a 1st Free Checked Bag benefit, you can use it to check your standard carry-on item in the airport lobby, free of charge.

Core Credit Card + Elite Status

Core credit card holders (TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card, CIBC Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card, American Express Aeroplan Card) who are Aeropaln elite status members will receive a free carry-on item for their status and then can apply their first checked bag free benefit towards their checked bag.

If you’re an Aeroplan Elite Status Member with a core credit card, you will still be able to bring on board one (1) personal article and one (1) standard carry-on bag when travelling on a Basic fare.

Premium Credit Card Holders

Premium Credit Card Holders (American Express® Aeroplan®* Reserve Card, TD® Aeroplan® Visa Infinite Privilege* CardCIBC Aeroplan® Visa Infinite Privilege* Card,) will get a free carry-on for basic fares and then can apply their first checked bag free benefit towards their checked bag.

All the Aeroplan Premium Credit Cardholder benefits you enjoy today continue to apply (for example, 1st Free Checked Bag benefits), and you may also bring one (1) standard carry-on bag and one (1) personal item on board

Aeroplan point matching week for Give A Mile: Let’s hit that new goal of 100,000 points for flights of compassion!

November 19 tally: 73,775 points of 50,000 100,000 points

We have been running our Flight Hero Holiday Campaign with Give A Mile for over a month now and if you have not donated yet NOW is the time to do so as Aeroplan will match donations made to Give A Mile from December 9 to 15th!

This points matching should help a lot with Give A Miles goal of being able raise enough points, miles and cash to provide 52 flights of compassion.

Here at RWRDS Canada our goal was to raise 50,000 points between us and our subscribers, followers, readers, listeners and viewers – however eclipsed that quite early in the campaign so we have set a new goal of 100,000 points and with the match from Air Canada! you can help us hit that goal super fast!
