The Walmart Rewards Mastercard and Walmart Rewards World Mastercard, both of which are cards that don’t get talked about much in the world of credit card rewards have been enhanced. And by enhanced, we truly mean made better, not the typical loyalty program use of enhancement which tends to stand for an overall devaluation.
New and existing holders of the cards will now earn 5% back in Walmart Rewards when using the card to purchase select Walmart brands. They will also now earn 2% back in rewards for gas, EV charging, transit, taxi, ride sharing and more.
Walmart brands that earn 5%
These are the brands that will earn the 5% back in Walmart Rewards are:
- George
- Athletic Works
- Your Fresh Market
- Great Value
- Our Finest
- Equate
- Parent’s Choice
- MainStays
This is valid on the above products purchased at any Walmart store in Canada or on Walmart.ca (sold and shipped by Walmart) when charged to your Walmart Rewards Mastercard.
5% is calculated as an additional 3.75% Walmart Reward Dollars if you make the purchase using a Walmart Rewards Mastercard in store or online, or for Walmart Rewards World Mastercard purchases, an additional Walmart Rewards Dollars of 3.75% in store and 2% online.
2% on gas & transportation
Both cards also now have an accelerated earn rate of 2% for gas, EV charging, transit, taxi, ride sharing. This 2% reward is earned on the first $5,000 spent in the category annually. After which the earn rate drops down to 1%.
Earn 2% in Walmart Reward Dollars on all purchases charged to your Walmart Rewards Mastercard or Walmart Rewards World Mastercard at (i) automatic gas pumps and gas stations worldwide, including gas station stores on the first $5,000 CAD annual purchases renewing every January 1 and electric vehicle charging stations (ii) merchants classified by the credit-card network as local and suburban commuter passenger transportation, including buses, subway, streetcar, taxi, limousine, ferry and ride-sharing services. Exclusions apply.
Wrapping it up
You can’t complain when something is made better! These are some excellent changes that should make Walmart shoppers that have or will get a Walmart Mastercard happy! 5% back on Walmart brands is an excellent earn rate for these no fee cards. Some may find it too limiting though when you have cards like the MBNA Rewards World Elite Mastercard earning up to 5.5 points per dollar on entire purchases from Walmart Supercentres but then again the latter has a $120 annual fee. And the 2% return on gas, transit, transportation etc. is also great addition to the cards seeing how their direct competitors like the CIBC Costco Mastercard offer 2% on gas but that’s gas only, whereas Walmart has gone beyond that.
