TD Rewards Book Any Way Travel

TD Rewards improves the any travel anytime reward option for their credit cards!

Great news for TD Rewards members as TD has improved the redemption rate for any travel anytime rewards! This is the reward option where cardholders can go out and book any travel they please on their cards and then redeem the points towards the charge at a rate of 225 points for $1. TD Rewards refers to this option as “Book Any Way Travel”

The improved redemption rate of 225 points to $1 for Book Any Way Travel

Up until this change, the redemption rate for booking any travel on the cards outside of Expedia for TD was 250 points for a $1 credit. The new redemption of 225 points for $1 marks a 10% increase in per point value. This meant the old redemption rate provided a value of 0.4 cents per point and the new rate works out to 0.444 cents per point.

That may not look like a huge increase but at least it’s an increase! In the world of a loyalty and credit cards most changes end up taking away from the consumer, this change does not. And this isn’t the first move TD has made to improve their products! Their flagship TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card was enhanced earlier this year (and it was a true enhancement) with the addition free annual airport lounge passes and additional accelerated earn rates!

This new redemption rate is applicable for all of the TD Rewards program cards which are the TD First Class Visa Infinite Card, TD Platinum Travel Visa Card, TD Rewards Visa* Card, TD Rewards Visa* Card and TD Business Travel Visa Card

All other redemption rates in the TD Rewards program remain the same. This includes the best redemption of using the points via Expedia for TD at a rate of 200 points to $1 and also the cash back pay with points (non-travel) rate of 400 points to $1

Point Valuation Example

For the Rewards Canada community and many Canadians in general the primary TD Rewards cards that is being utilized is the TD First Class Visa Infinite Card. The card has a variety of earn rates for spending across different categories so that can make it harder to determine the actual return on spending but don’t worry – we’ve got you covered with this chart that has the calculations done for you!

Spending Category Points earned per dollar spent Rate of return when booking via Expedia for TD Rate of return when booking any travel on your own Rate of return Cash Back
Expedia for TD 8 4% 3.55% 2%
Groceries, Restaurants, Drinking Establishments, Public Transit 6 3% 2.66% 1.5%
Recurring Bills, Streaming, Digital Gaming & Media Purchases 4 2% 1.8% 1%
All other spending 2 1% 0.88% 0.5%

and we also have it with the 10% birthday bonus points:

Spending Category Points earned per dollar spent Rate of return when booking via Expedia for TD Rate of return when booking any travel on your own Rate of return Cash Back
Expedia for TD 8.8 4.4% 3.87% 2.2%
Groceries, Restaurants, Drinking Establishments, Public Transit 6.6 3.3% 2.9% 1.65%
Recurring Bills, Streaming, Digital Gaming & Media Purchases 4.4 2.2% 1.94% 1.1%
All other spending 2.2 1.1% 0.97% 0.55%

As you can see, the any travel anytime rate of returns are still lower than the Expedia for TD returns which is the best redemption option in TD Rewards. But with that said the Any Travel anytime option provides much more flexibility booking travel, such as booking low cost airlines direct as they may not be on Expedia. So it’s great to have thee variety of redemption options with the cards and it’s great that cardholders will now get more value for the Any Travel anytime redemption. And this change will move the card up to 6th overall from 8th in our Credit Cards Ranked: Any Travel Anytime Rewards

Side note: Are any of you old like me and still remember when the TD First Class was only an Any Travel Anytime card (no Expedia option) and the redemption value was the same as the Expedia rate at 0.5 cents? Those were the good old days!
