Aeroplan is out with a buy or gift points promotion where you can buy Aeroplan points with up to a 30% discount. This is a tiered discount that increases with the more points you buy and it runs until Nov 18, 2024
The up to 30% discount offer:

Buy 10,000 – 19,000 points receive a 15% discount
Buy 20,000 – 75,000 points receive a 20% discount
Buy 80,000 – 95,000 points receive a 25% discount
Buy 100,000+ points receive a 30% discount
Does it make sense to buy points?
When you buy points at the 30% discount level your cost on each point is 2.45 cents (C$) each before taxes. Since we value Aeroplan points at a minimum of 1.5 cents each you would think it wouldn’t make sense to buy them for more than that but there are times where you can extract a more value.
In some of our more recent Aeroplan Availability Alert the redemption value of the points was above this purchase price so it can make sense to buy the points:
- Austrian Airlines Business Class Montreal to Vienna for up to 8 or more people per flight (3.55 cents per point)
- SWISS Business Class Montreal to Zurich for up to 8 or more people per flight (2.69 to 6.5 cents per point)
In these cases where you can extract value like that it can make sense to buy points as you would end up saving some cash on your trips.
Wrapping it up
The up to 30% discount for buying Air Canada Aeroplan points is definitely only one to consider if you need points right away for a redemption such as those pointed out above. With past buy points offers bringing the price below 2 cents per point you’ll want to wait for a future offer with better value.
