If you are unfamiliar with Stash, it is a loyalty program for independent boutique hotels that has been steadily adding locations here in Canada. In just the past couple of years they have gone from zero locations to 15 partner hotels in B.C. and Ontario and have more to come. The entire program now counts over 325 locations in the U.S., Canada, Caribbean, Central America and the even the Cook Islands.
What is Stash Hotel Rewards?
As mentioned above, Stash Hotel Rewards, aka Stash Rewards, is a loyalty program for independent boutique hotels. It was launched in 2010 by Jeff Low to provide independent hotels with a tool to help drive direct bookings and compete against the major chains. 14 years later the program has grown to over 1.2 million members and is considered North America’s largest points based loyalty program for highly rated independent hotels.
The unique aspect of Stash Hotel Rewards is that not just any independent hotel can join the program. Each independent hotel must be highly rated (one, two or perhaps even three star reviews are not allowed!) to be accepted into the program and become a partner.
Stash Hotel Rewards in Canada
If you have followed RWRDS Canada for at least a year or two now (or 14 years since Stash launched), you’ll know that we provide regular updates each time Stash adds new a Canadian location. Most recently, it was the The Inn at Laurel Point in Victoria and The Kent Motel in the Niagara region which became their 14th and 15th partner hotels in Canada.
14 out of their 15 current hotels are in B.C. and that can be partially attributed to Stash joining and partnering with the B.C. Hotel Association. Recently I spoke with the BCHA and they let us know the partnership has been great as they had independent hotel members asking about how they can go about joining a loyalty program and Stash has fit that role perfectly.
I also spoke with Stash about their steady growth here and they said there are no plans to slow down. We should be seeing them add even more locations in B.C. and Ontario very soon and hopefully it won’t be long before independent hotels in other provinces start joining as well.
Earning Stash Reward points
Earning Stash Rewards Points is simple, with the program you earn 5 Stash Rewards points per US$1 on accommodations (not incl. fees/taxes).
Bonus points
Throughout the year there are many Stash partner hotels offering bonus points for stays. At the time of posting this article, here in Canada The Fairways Hotel on the Mountain in Langford, the Naramata Inn and Sun Peaks Grand Hotel & Conference Centre all had bonus points offers available. Additional points opportunities
It should be noted that Stash Points never expire and you can even earn some more points for free. For example, they will award with 250 points when you update your profile (once per year):
You can also receive 250 Free Stash Rewards Points when you follow Stash Rewards on Instagram! Simply follow them and then send them a DM with your Stash Rewards ID #.
Stash also tends to run occasional surveys with which you can earn points for completing. You can also earn 100 points for referring people to the program and 500 more points when they complete their first Stash stay.
Redeeming points
Redeeming points is dynamic and based on the cash price of the hotel for the dates you are looking to book. For the most part we’ve seen that the redemption rate runs right around 100 points to US$1 and that also covers any taxes and fees. You do have to redeem the full amount of points required for a free night. At this time the program does not offer points+cash redemption options.
The example above is for The Naramata Inn which is situated on Okanagan Lake just north of Penticton. As you can see for this example you would need to redeem 19,200 points for the US$191.62 room rate, which is pretty close to 100 points to $1. With the Canadian conversion from this example, 100 Stash Rewards Points works out to roughly C$1.34 in value.
Special Stash Rewards pricing
Many of the Stash partner hotels also offer member only deals. These are special rates that are only available when you book on the Stash Hotel Rewards Website.
If you see this banner on the Stash site, it is a special rate that is lower than the best available rate on the hotel’s own website or those you might find via Online Travel Agencies (OTA).
Wrapping it up
Stash Hotel Rewards is expanding in Canada and part of that expansion plan includes growing their membership base here in the Great White North.
