The long awaited partnership between Air Canada’s Aeroplan and Parkland Fuel’s JOURNIE Rewards is here! As of today, Aeroplan members can earn and redeem points at over 1,100 Ultramar, Chevron, Pioneer, Fas Gas, ON the RUN and Marché Express locations Canada-wide.
Earning and redeeming Aeroplan points
Aeroplan members who do not link their account with a JOURNIE Rewards account will be able to earn and redeem points as follows on their purchases at participating Parkland locations:
- 1 Aeroplan point earned per 3-litre fuel purchase;
- 1 Aeroplan point earned per $1 eligible convenience store purchase; and
- 3,500 Aeroplan points redemption for $25 Parkland fuel branded gift cards via the Aeroplan eStore.
The earning and redeeming gets better if you link you Aeroplan account with a JOURNIE Rewards accounts – and why shouldn’t you? The programs are both free to join so you might as well do so! You can link your accounts exclusively in the Journie App. I joined JOURNIE Rewards last night (with 225 free points for mobile sign up and email opt in) and linked my Aeroplan account. It probably took three or four minutes at the max!
Here is what linked accounts will earn and be able to redeem for:
- Earn up to 3X more points compared to members who have not linked their accounts. More specifically, earn 300 Aeroplan points for every 300-point JOURNIE™ Rewards tier (which is equivalent to 1 Aeroplan point per 1-litre fuel purchase and 2 points per $1 on eligible in-store purchases)
- Redeem 300 Aeroplan points for a $0.07 off per litre voucher for a single fill-up (up to 50 litres), and stack up to 5 vouchers for up to $0.35 off per litre
- Redeem 1,200 Aeroplan points for a $15.99 Premium Car wash;
- Redeem 500 Aeroplan points for a $5 in-store purchase vouchers.
Quick thoughts on the new partnership
The base earn of 1 point per three litres of fuel reminds me of when Aeroplan was partnered with Esso, where it was 1 point per $3 spent. With gas prices the way they are now this earn rate is actually lower but in reality you really should be connecting your accounts so that you are earning those extra Aeroplan points and end up with a better earn rate!
Based on the information on the JOURNIE Rewards website, you will not earn points in both programs as we were leaning towards when this partnership was first announced in April. If you have linked accounts when you reach 300 JOURNIE Rewards points you will receive 300 Aeroplan Points instead of the 7 cents per litre discount on your next fill up that JOURNIE program provides to its members.
However, you will have the option to redeem those 300 Aeroplan points for a 7 cents off voucher. This means you are better off connecting your accounts as you’ll have multiple options to choose from – you can choose to keep the Aeroplan points to grow your balance for those future flight award or other Aeroplan redemption options or redeem the 300 points for your fuel discount. You basically get the best of both worlds with this partnership when you link your accounts.
You’ll also be able to redeem for a premium car wash – Aeroplan told us it is 1,200 points for a $15.99 car wash however the JOURNIE Rewards website shows 1,100 points. Hopefully it is the latter!
And don’t forget if you have a CIBC Aeroplan credit card (or any other CIBC credit card for that matter) you can link it with your JOURNIE Rewards account to save 3 cents per litre when you pay for fuel with the linked card.
Wrapping it up
Air Canada’s Aeroplan is back at the pumps after few years hiatus, this time with Parkland Fuels and JOURNIE Rewards. Members can now earn and redeem points at over 1,100 locations Canada wide and they have the choice of just showing (or inputting) their Aeroplan number to earn points but will be able to earn more and have additional redemption options when they link their Aeroplan account with their JOURNIE Rewards account.
