Aeroplan Family Sharing

Aeroplan Family Sharing misuse leads to the temporary suspension of the creation of new plans

We just received notice from Air Canada that they have temporarily suspended the ability to create new Family Sharing Plans. This feature which was was added to the program when it was revamped in 2020 allows family/groups to pool Aeroplan points to achieve rewards faster. It has proven to be very popular and is a great option in the program but it appears that some people may have found a loophole or some other way to abuse it.

Aeroplan has told us that due to an increase in the misuse of the Family Sharing option they have had to suspend the ability to create new accounts (online or by phone) This suspension is temporary and does not affect existing accounts. Those existing accounts will continue to operate normally with the ability to add and remove members.

The program also let us know they are working on the problem and didn’t want to suspend the program 100% as that would affect those members and family plans that aren’t misusing the benefit. They are addressing it behind the scenes and they hope that in a few weeks the ability to create new Family Sharing accounts will be restored.

Stay tuned to Rewards Canada as this news develops! We’ll bring you all the details as soon as we become aware of them.
