You know him as the host of the Rewards Canada Podcast and today Jeff Fredericks expands his role with Rewards Canada as a contributor to our blog. Jeff was lucky enough to attend Toronto’s Fairmont Royal York Hotel 90th anniversary celebration in June. Here is his recap of the event:
Last month the Fairmont Royal York celebrated its 90th anniversary and held a ribbon cutting ceremony to officially unveil the completion of an extensive multi-year renovation including a transformed lobby and new lobby bar.
At the time, the tallest building in Toronto and the entire British Empire, the 28-storey hotel was the most dominating building of its era when it opened in 1929.
On June 24th, the hotel hosted a party for the ages with a large birthday celebration featuring three events in one. Guests were decked out in their best cocktail attire and treated to live music by Montreal Rhapsody Orchestra, a fashion show curated by CAFA, an official cake cutting and remarks from executives of the Fairmont.
The swanky event was, in many ways, a throwback to a time when the Royal York was ‘the’ place to be seen. The $5 million worth of ‘refurbishments’ was on full display including a new 90th Anniversary clock which executives “dedicated to the people of the city of Toronto, as well as the past, present and future colleagues of Fairmont Royal York who have, for 90 years, been the beating “heart” of our hotel.”
Located directly across from Toronto’s Union Station and near prominent attractions including the Hockey Hall of Fame, Rogers Centre, Scotia Bank Centre and CN Tower, the Fairmont Royal York Hotel should be high on your list of hotels to consider when visiting the city.
