Air Canada Aeroplan has joined a half dozen other airline programs that allow transfers of their points into Marriott Bonvoy. As of today, Aeroplan Elite members can now choose to transfer their Aeroplan points to Marriott Bonvoy points on a 1:1 basis.
The Aeroplan to Marriott Transfer Process
Per Aeroplan’s partner page:
Aeroplan Elite Status Members can convert their Aeroplan points at a rate of 1 Aeroplan point to 1 Marriott Bonvoy point. A minimum of 500 Aeroplan points are required. Transfer up to 100,000 Aeroplan points per day.
It seems like a pretty simple process to go about converting your points to Marriott Bonvoy
Should you convert Aeroplan points to Marriott Bonvoy points
For most Aeroplan members it won’t make sense to transfer points to Marriott at a 1:1 rate. On a per point basis Aeroplan points are generally worth more than Marriott Bonvoy points so you could stand to lose overall value.
That being said, if you are shy some points for a redemption with Marriott stay and are sitting on “more Aeroplan points than you know what to do with them” it could very well make sense to move some over to Marriott so you can complete that hotel stay redemption.
You could even leverage this transfer option as a way to convert points to Marriott’s other airline partners from ANA to British Airways to United and many others. Again, it may not be the most ideal option if you look at pure point value but hey, if by transferring your Aeroplan points to Marriott then onto another airlines gets you to a point where you redeem for an award with that said airline, that’s great!
Wrapping it up
Aeroplan is following in the footsteps of several other airline programs who have already implemented reciprocal transfers with Marriott. Most recently it was Cathay and Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer who began to offer the same option. Korean SKYPASS used to also offer it for a couple of years but they completely severed ties with Marriott Bonvoy just a few short months ago.
