For the second time in a few short months we see the $150 CT Money welcome bonus on the Canadian Tire Triangle Mastercards. Last time we mentioned an offer likes this is a rare sight but to have again so soon may be an indication it will become a regular occurrence. The Triangle Mastercards are not well known for offering a welcome bonus and when they have in the past they were very limited and/or targeted. Now, for the next 10 days or so we have a new welcome bonus offer of $150 CT Money (Canadian Tire Money) out for the Triangle Mastercard and the Triangle World Elite Mastercard.
All the wording of the offer makes it seem like it is only for the base Triangle Mastercard but based on the last offer it is also available on the World Elite Mastercard.
The $150 CT Money Bonus
To earn the $150 CT Money Bonus simply apply for a Triangle Mastercard by September 12, 2024 using this link as the general link on the Triangle website does not show this offer. Then once you are approved, you simply need to make a qualifying purchase within 30 days at participating Triangle retailers:
- Canadian Tire
- Sport Chek
- Atmosphere
- Mark’s
- L’Equipeur
- Sports Rousseau
- Hockey Experts
- L’Entrepot du Hockey
- participating Sports Experts stores
The purchase can be made in-store or online and there is no mention of a minimum purchase amount but like many card offers that require a first purchase, I would try to charge at least $1 if not more to be safe. The bonus should be awarded within 5 weeks after completing the first purchase.
Triangle Mastercard Basics
The Triangle Mastercard is a no annual fee card that earns CT Money in the Triangle Rewards program. The CT Money is earned as follows:
- 4% back in CT Money on almost everything at Canadian Tire, Sport Chek, Mark’s, L’Équipeur, Party City, Atmosphere, Pro Hockey Life, Sports Rousseau, Hockey Experts, L’Entrepôt du Hockey and participating Sports Experts
- 5¢ per litre back in CT Money when you fill up at Gas+ and Essence+ locations.
- 1.5% back in CT Money on grocery purchases (on the first $12,000 per year; excludes Costco and Walmart).
- 0.5% on all other purchases
Triangle World Elite Mastercard Basics
The Triangle World Elite Mastercard is a no annual fee card that earns CT Money in the Triangle Rewards program. Being a World Elite Mastercard it has a minimum income requirement of $80,000 personal or $150,000 household.
CT Money is earned as follows on the World Elite card :
- 4% back in CT Money on almost everything at Canadian Tire, Sport Chek, Mark’s, L’Équipeur, Party City, Atmosphere, Pro Hockey Life, Sports Rousseau, Hockey Experts, L’Entrepôt du Hockey and participating Sports Experts
- 5¢ to 7¢ per litre back in CT Money when you fill up at Gas+ and Essence+ locations.
- 3% back in CT Money on grocery purchases (on the first $12,000 per year; excludes Costco and Walmart).
- 1% on all other purchases
The World Elite card offers the following benefits:
- Purchase Security Insurance
- Car Rental Collision/Loss Damage Waiver Insurance
- Roadside Assistance Gold Plan
- Personal 24/7 concierge service
- Plus you’ll get the standard benefits that all World Elite cards in Canada receive such as Mastercard TravelPass by DragonPass (Airport lounge access membership) and free Boingo Wi-Fi
The CT Money earned on the credit cards can be redeemed at any store that participates in Triangle Reward (Same as those listed above) at the same dollar value, that is $1 CT Money = $1 towards your purchase. Essentially these are cash back cards however as the cash back redemption is limited to stores that participate in Triangle Rewards they are better off to be known as “Shopping Rewards” credit cards.
Pay utilities with the cards
One of the most loved benefits of the Triangle Mastercards is an option to pay utilities and some other bills that normally don’t accept credit cards. Once you have a Triangle Mastercard, you can pay these utilities etc. via the Canadian Tire Financial Services portal – they will pay the bill for you just as you would via online banking or in the bank, and then charge it to your Mastercard – with no fee. So not only do you not pay any fees (like those charged by PaySimply, Plastiq etc.) to pay these bills, you’ll also receive your base earn rate of 0.5% or 1% per dollar spent on these bills.
Wrapping it up
It’s great to see another open welcome bonus on the Triangle Mastercards and a pretty good one at that – as long as you are a shopper at stores where you can redeem CT Money! That’s the thing, this offer won’t be for everyone – if you don’t shop at Canadian Tire, Marks etc. then there is no point to consider this card and you’d be better off looking at a true cash back card like the Rogers World Elite Mastercard. But, if you are a shopper at these stores, to get $150 to use for future purchases is something to consider and more so if you want that option to pay for utilities etc. with no extra fees and earning rewards for doing so.
