100 best credit cards

Canada’s best credit cards as ranked across 100 categories

Today, Rewards Canada is pleased to announce Canada’s best credit cards as ranked across 100 categories. This latest credit card ranking endeavour from Canada’s original loyalty and credit card resource marks a big step in the evolution of “best of” lists.

As one of the originators of credit card rankings in Canada, Rewards Canada published its first Top Travel Credit Cards ranking way back in 2009. Now, the website researches over 200 cards and most recently ranked them accordingly in 10 categories. Well, technically, it’s nine categories with an overall category on travel which takes the best of the best out of seven travel categories. But let’s not be nit-picky.

“At Rewards Canada we used to think 10 categories was a lot – almost too many as it just ends up confusing consumers” explains Patrick Sojka, founder of Rewards Canada. “However, we see other sites out there ranking cards in 23 categories, 30 categories, 37 categories or whatever amount of categories. And we couldn’t just let that be.”

“As Canada’s original credit card rankers we made the decision that we didn’t want to be out done” stated Sojka “so we are proud to present Canada’s best credit cards as ranked in 100 categories!”

Here’s just ten of the categories that are included in Rewards Canada’s Top 100 for 2024:

  1. The best Visa card to use to buy a 591ml Coke Zero at Super K Convenience in Flin Flon, Manitoba
  2. The best Mastercard for purchase protection and extended warranty coverage for a $2.99 slinky bought off Amazon
  3. The best Rogers Mastercard for paying a Bell Mobility bill
  4. The best credit card to access the departures area at Iqaluit International Airport
  5. The best American Express Card for buying a pomegranate at Loblaws
  6. The best Visa Card that will rise to the occasion and eclipse the rest (IYKYK)
  7. The best metal credit card design that won’t impress anyone as you only use it via the digital wallet on your smart phone
  8. The best credit card to use to pick that little bit of Mucho Burrito or Chipotle carnitas stuck in-between your teeth
  9. The best hotel card… whoops, there’s only one brand of hotel card in Canada so it could be absolute junk and it would still be the best one (luckily, they do have really good cards though!)
  10. The best AIR MILES card – well, we’re not entirely sure about this one either, with Amex no longer offering AIR MILES cards do we really need to be awarding a badge for a best BMO AIR MILES card? Whatever, we’ll give it to them anyways so we have a chance to earn more commissions.

“I can’t wait to apply for the best Mastercard for purchase protection and extended warranty on a slinky”  added Patrick “my kids will be so excited to get their present in a month or so after I apply for the card, don’t get instant approval, wait 10 business days to get that approval and another 10 business days to have the card on hand. But, at least I know that slinky will be protected the minute it gets stretched out and doesn’t slink anymore!”

The ridiculousness of credit card rankings in Canada is, well, just ridiculous. They really have gotten out of hand and in the end all they do is confuse consumers. And we here at Rewards Canada place 100% of the blame on ourselves for creating this nonsense with Canada’s first credit card rankings in 2009 (at least to best of our knowledge they were the first) and then issuing digital badges for the card issuers to use.

Nowadays, it seems like every single credit card in Canada is awarded a digital badge from some sort of money-miles-points-credit-card-finance-lifestyle website and the banks display them proudly to claim they are the best in some sort of BMO-CIBC-RBC-Scotia-TD-Amex-scratch-my-back-I’ll-scratch-your-back-category. And… Rewards Canada is ever so happy to add to that list and we are ecstatic to lay claim that no one else has ever awarded a badge for the best Visa card to use to buy a 591ml Coke Zero at Super K Convenience in Flin Flon, Manitoba. No siree, that’s ours and ours alone!

Happy April Fools’ Day everyone!

P.S. The winner of the best Visa card to use to buy a 591ml Coke Zero at Super K Convenience in Flin Flon, Manitoba is the American Express Cobalt… oops, I mean CIBC Dividend Visa Infinite Card.
