Stay Example:
Here’s a two night stay in Ottawa from October 4th to 6th:
Is it worth it?
From this example (and this is the same for all three hotels) the bonus points rate prices the same as the Flexible Rate. The Flexible Rate will always be slightly more than the Member Flexible Rate. With the Ottawa example the stay ends up being $15 more to include the 5,000 bonus points. We value Bonvoy points at ~1 cent each (C$) so you would be earning ~$50 in points for that $15 extra.
Another way to look at the value of the bonus points rate it is that they are a way to buy points much cheaper than we see with Marriott’s buy points sales. In this example you would be paying 0.3 cents per point whereas when you buy points – say with a 40% bonus like the offer that ended earlier this month – you are paying between 1.25 to 1.5 cents per point.
Plus, if you are paying for your stay with a Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card or the Marriott Bonvoy Business American Express Card you’ll earn 5 points per dollar for the $15 extra on this bonus points rate. Compare this to only 2 points per dollar you would earn if buying points directly as the transaction is completed by Points.com and not Marriott.
Of course, on top of the 5,000 bonus points you’ll earn the 1,500 bonus points from Marriott with their systemwide promotion and if it happens to be the third, sixth, ninth (and so on) brand you are staying at during the promotion you’ll also score another 3,000 bonus points.
