November 6 Update: AIR MILES It’s-Been-a-Year Merchandise sale provides some really good value & Emirates to cut partner access to First Class rewards

AIR MILES is offering reduced mileage requirements on over 1,000 reward items in their catalogue for the rest of this year with the It’s Been a Year event.
And what a year it has been! This offer comes at a good time with
Christmas upon us and many Canadians feeling a financial pinch where it
may be tougher to pay for gifts so offers like this can go a long way.
Yes merchandise rewards aren’t the ideal reward if you chase the highest
value out of your loyalty currencies but we are in a different world
now and this merchandise sale brings values close to or equal to travel
redemption values!

For example you can get an Instant Pot for 1,740
miles instead of the regular 2,800 miles. The retail price of the pot
when searching around was $249.99 which means you would be receiving a
0.143 cents per mile value – that’s really good considering we value AIR
MILES at 0.11 to 0.15 cents each when redeeming for travel and that
amount falls on the higher end. This also doesn’t take into account
taxes! If you went out and bought this pot you’d also pay 5 to 13% tax
depending on which province you live in and when you redeem via AIR
MILES you don’t pay taxes on merchandise. Finally on top of this you’ll
have the redemption amounts further reduced if you are a Gold collector
or Onyx collector by 5 and 10% respectively which ultimately gives you
even more value! Learn more about the It’s Been a Year event here.

Alaska Airlines has notified their Mileage Plan
members that as of March 31, 2021 you will no longer be able to redeem
miles for First Class flights on Emirates. The way Alaska words it is
that this coming from Emirates and that the latter will no longer give
access to First Class awards to any partner airlines. This is one of
those amazing aspirational goals many mileage and points addicts have
their sights set on and the best the way to reach it was with Alaska
Airlines – even with a one way flight costing 150,000 miles! If it is a
reward you had your eye on you have a few months yet to try and redeem
for it as you can book these rewards right up to March 31, 2021 meaning
you can book travel into early 2022. Learn more here.
